Henri Mirande, The Little Fish and the Angler, 1935

Item — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0123.1
Abstract I am surprised that I have not before run into any members of this strong set of cards. Of the six listed in French Wikipédia, only "Le Milan et le Rossignol" is not included among these nine. Might it have been a set of ten? The artistry is strong on caricature, and the style might best be characterized as "cartoon." Each image makes room for the handwritten fable or important portions of it. Fables are visually transposed, where necessary, into human terms. Thus the tale of the two...

Imageries Réunies de Jarville-Nancy, 1952

File — Box: CFC Broadsides Box 1
Identifier: CFC2024.0061.1
Abstract This find was the beginning of a lovely -- and expensive! -- Sunday at "Les Puces"! I found these on my own in the first shop I entered; Malassis is an antiques market on the way to my favorite book market, Marché Dauphine. I had to ask the dealer to hold these for me, and I would pick them up at the end of the day. They were a serious issue when I packed my overstuffed bags to leave Paris three and a half weeks later! Now of course I need to find the other four posters! Lacking are #2004,...

Jacques Offenbach: 6 Fables de La Fontaine; Chanson de Fortunio, 2004

Item — Box: CFC CDs Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0375.1
Abstract This is the first time, I believe, that I have sat and listened to these renderings. They are delightful. The music moves wonderfully in coordination with the text of La Fontaine. The silent moment, for example, in "Shepherd and Sea" comes at the time when the former flock owner has lost everything at sea and must return now to be a hired shepherd. The contrast in voices in "Cobbler and Financier" is also engaging. Likewise, the choice of phrases to be repeated supports well what is...

Jean Claval: "L'Aventure Carto,", 1992

File — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0036.1-38
Abstract This is one of the liveliest sets of illustrations of La Fontaine's fables that I have encountered. Card after card has surprises! The ass who has crossed the river with salt holds onto a bush with a fingered hand in #2. In #9, the angler is wondering about the small fish he has caught just as a huge Jaws-like shark is ready to break the surface just below him! In "Acorn and Pumpkin" (#15), La Fontaine is walking away from and looking back at the bumpkin about to get hit on the nose by a...

Item — Box: CFC CDs Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0364.1
Abstract

A very nice rendition of sixteen La Fontaine fables, complete with well integrated orchestral support. Millaire has a lovely voice. See the book and cassette that were all apparently done together.

Jeanne Lagarde, 1950

File — Box: CFC Postcards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0126.1-8
Abstract The approach of these cards is uniform and, to me, unsatisfying. The children seem presented to remind one of the fable situation, not to play it out in their own world. Perhaps the foxy boy has talked the dreamy girl on a limb of a tree out of her cheese or bread; this card may come the closest to playing out the fable in the world of these children. How, however, are the boy and girl at the stream wolf and lamb? Is the girl with the potted plant teaching the boy with the shovel to love...

Jeujura Old French Story Blocks 5x4, 1950

Item — Box: CFC Story Blocks Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0516.1
Abstract 1950? Set of 20 six-sided picture cubes illustrating fables. Jeujura. Slightly larger than 1½" on each cube's side. TH; GA; WL; OF; MM; and FC.Here is another lovely and well-used set of story blocks, complete with five complete pictures to work from. Jeujura is still making wooden toys today after something like a century of productivity. The artist cleverly works the chicken, pig, and cow into the picture for MM. I think the artist finds GA’s ant friendlier than La...

La Belette entree dans un Grenier, 1910

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 11
Identifier: CFC2022.0083.2
Abstract The blue illustrations inside a black floral-animal circular frame on these crème colored plates are adventuresome "translations" of the fables into human situations and events. Some of the human scenes depicted here are hard for me to decipher. Is the dog's plight in DW that he lives in a spare room in the attic? Is the promenading wife in FG looking down on others she could have married? Has the hookah-smoker taken over a whole room in his host's house? Will the child bothering the...

Identifier: CFC2019.0089.1.6
Abstract

The two different manufacturers can be seen from the different lettering used on two different sets, one of them all in caps. For a "wrap-around" view of any of these from 360 degrees, click on the image. The exception is the last member, a wolf donated along with other sets later on.

La Cigale et la Fourmi, 1950

 Item
Identifier: CFC2022.0006
Abstract

Here is a large puzzle -- the largest in our collection -- in a box about 12" x 10½". Seven blocks across and six high. Each of the six scenes is a different La Fontaine fable, appropriate labeled. The other five pictures survive! It is not easy to guess when this puzzle was made. Jeujura has apparently been around for a long time! GA; TH; MM; OF; FC; and "The Heron."

La Cigale et la fourmi, 1980

Item — Box: CFC Tableware Box 1
Identifier: CFC2019.0254.1.1
Abstract

La Cigale et la fourmi Apparently we are in the fall. The ant in his scarf is rubbing his hands behind a tree, as leaves fall from the tree. I think the artist's intent here is to have the ant cold in his winter clothes, while the cicada is still doing fine in his light clothes. In any case, this cicada is a hippy with "Love" on his t-shirt and long hair on his head.

La Cigale et la Fourmi, Set of 4, 1900

File — Box: CFC Trade Cards Box 1
Identifier: CFC2021.0160.1-4

The back of each card shows a design of the actual department store buildings under the name "Maison Aristide Boucicaut" and invites guests at the Exposition Universelle 1900 to shop at this store. Each card promises "Interpretes dans toutes les langues" and proudly claims "Hors concours - membre du jury"! The colors are a bit faint, but this is a classy set.
